Foggy Bottom, West End and GWU

The West End is a small region of D.C. named because it was the westernmost point of the original Pierre L’Enfant plan for the city of Washington, before the annexation of Georgetown. The West End has long been defined by the fact that it was not any of the adjacent, more prominent neighborhoods: Dupont Circle, Foggy Bottom, and Georgetown. Its prominent landmarks were a Ritz Carlton hotel and residences, a few other upscale hotels, several large office buildings, the West End branch of the D.C. Public Library and an Exxon gas station.

Watergate Apartments approximately 630 residential units in the complex offer the greatest location in the city, convenient to shopping, the arts, METRO and downtown.

The buildings of Foggy Bottom’s historic district date back to the 1770s. The community was once the home of a number of immigrants who worked in nearby industrial companies, such as breweries, gas companies and the glass works.

Foggy Bottom provides easy access to a number of outstanding post-secondary institutions, including George Washington University (GWU). The history of the university is inextricably linked with that of the surrounding community. GWU moved to Foggy Bottom in 1912, and the university now encompasses 18 of the community’s blocks. GWU makes up a large part of Foggy Bottom’s unique personality.

More than 70 other colleges and universities are located in nearby communities and large cities. Three of the more prestigious universities in the world are located within 40 minutes of Foggy Bottom. The first and closest is Georgetown University, nestled in the center of our nation’s capital. The next is Johns Hopkins University and Hospital in Baltimore and the third is the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis.

Thanks to its proximity to the rest of Washington D.C., Foggy Bottom offers easy access to some of the nation’s most cherished landmarks. The White House, the Lincoln Memorial and the Potomac River are all within walking distance. Dupont Circle and the National Zoo are also easily accessible by Metro.

Residents can also cheer for a variety of professional sports teams in some of the country’s newest arenas and stadiums. Basketball’s Washington Wizards and the Washington Capitals NHL hockey team play in the MCI Center while football’s Washington Redskins play in the newly renamed FedEx Stadium.

Furthermore, Foggy Bottom and the rest of the Washington D.C. Metro Area are less than an hour’s drive from cities such as Baltimore and Annapolis. The area is also located within minutes of the quaint Virginia towns of Alexandria and Mount Vernon.
